| MESOTHELIOMAMalignant mesothelioma is a malignant tumor arising in the pleura; composed of mesothelium, which is epithelium that covers the surfaces of membranes such as the pleura, peritoneum, and pericardium. Mesothelioma is generally caused by chronic exposure to airborne asbestos. Mesothelioma may not appear until decades after exposure to the asbestos dust or particles. Symptoms may include a persistent cough, heart palpitations, weight loss, shortness of breath, and/or abdominal swelling and tenderness. Unfortunately, in most cases, mesothelioma is not diagnosed until the latter stages of the disease. The condition is terminal if left untreated - the treatment of choice is the removal of the portion of the organ containing the cancer. Pharmaceutical intervention is a adjunctive treatment - and usually used to treat bacterial infections that arise secoundary from respiratory infections that are common in the mid to latter stages of the disease.
