BIPOLAR DISORDER INFORMATION

Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder marked by alternating episodes of prolonged emotion - one or more manic episodes alternating with depressive episodes.  The manic phase is a period where the predominant mood is elevated euphoria and irritability.  Associated symptoms include inflated self-esteem and self-worth, decreased need for sleep, nearly continuous flow of rapid speech with rapid change of topic (flight of ideas), distractibility, and often elevated sexual urges coupled with lack of judgment.  Often there is an increased participation in social activities marked by dominating and demanding personality behavior.  The depressive stage of bipolar disorder involves periods of extreme dysphoria, sadness, hopelessness, worry, and discouragement.
 

DEPRESSIVE DISORDER INFORMATION
Depression involves prolonged periods of extreme sadness, hopelessness, worry and discouragement.  Other symptoms include appetite disturbances, and changes in weight, sleep changes (such as insomnia or hypersomnia), decreased energy, feeling increased and inappropriate guilt, low self-esteem and regression from society in general.
